CLIMBING KILIMANJARO PACKING LIST

MOUNT KILIMANJARO CLIMBING EQUIPMENT 

When preparing for a climb up Mount Kilimanjaro, it's crucial to have the right equipment. Here is a list of recommended clothing and gear for your climb:

Footwear:

  • Running shoes or lightweight trail shoes: For travel and easy walking.

  • Hiking boots: Leather with sturdy mid-sole and a Vibram sole. Alternatively, combination fabric and leather trail shoes can be acceptable.

  • Gaiters: Short, simple gaiters for mud and scree.

  • Sport sandals: Open-toe model for camp and safari.

  • Camp booties: Down or synthetic with thick foam soles.

Clothing:

  • Lightweight pants: Supplex or "stretch woven" pant.

  • Hiking shorts: Supplex shorts to be worn over lightweight long underwear bottoms.

  • Lightweight long underwear top: Capilene or similar.

  • Mid-weight long underwear top: Zip T-neck design in light colors.

  • Lightweight long underwear bottom: Dark colors preferable.

  • Mid-weight underwear bottom: Dark colors preferable.

  • Briefs: Synthetic or cotton.

  • Short-sleeved shirts: Synthetic shirts with vapor wicking capabilities.

  • Fleece or synthetic jacket: Polartec 100 or 200, or synthetic fill jacket made of Primaloft or Polarguard.

  • Synthetic-fill pants: Full side zips recommended.

  • Down insulated jacket: Medium weight, with or without a hood.

  • Waterproof breathable jacket & pants: Gore-Tex or similar, with a hood.

Head & Hand Gear:

  • Liner gloves: Lightweight and synthetic.

  • Windstopper fleece gloves.

  • Mittens with pile liners.

  • Bandana: Two to three traditional cotton style.

  • Sun hat: Lightweight hat with a good brim or visor.

  • Wool or fleece hat.

  • Balaclava.

Accessories:

  • Sunglasses #1: High-quality, 100% UV and IR protection.

  • Sunglasses #2: High-quality backup pair.

  • Headlamp with spare bulb.

  • Spare batteries.

  • Swiss army knife: Remember not to pack it in carry-on bags

Medical & Personal

  • Sunscreen: SPF 30 or higher, non-oily.

  • Lipscreen: SPF 30 or higher.

  • Toiletry kit: Toothbrush, toothpaste, skin lotion, hand sanitizer, soap, comb/brush, shave kit.

  • First-aid kit: Including medication prescribed by your doctor, assorted band-aids, moleskin, gauze pad, adhesive tape, tweezers, safety pins.

  • Large trash compactor bags: For waterproofing items.

  • Zip-loc bags.

  • Baby wipes.

  • Earplugs.

  • Water purification tablets.

Travel Items:

  • River Dry Bag: 115-liter size.

  • Large expedition duffel bag.

  • Small travel bag.

  • Nylon stuff sacks.

  • Clothes for safari.

  • Lightweight travel jacket.

  • Work-out clothes and/or bathing suit.

  • Passport belt/pouch.

  • Book(s).

  • Journal.

  • Binoculars: Optional.

  • Camera, lenses, video camera.

  • Film and/or memory cards for digital cameras.

Remember to choose high-quality brands and ensure that your clothing fits loosely and comfortably for layering. Additionally, it's essential to break in your footwear before the climb.
