Northern Circuit National Parks
Overview
Tanzania’s Northern Circuit is the most famous safari region in Africa, home to iconic national parks, dramatic landscapes, and some of the highest wildlife concentrations in the world.
This region offers classic African safari experiences filled with big cats, massive herds, volcanic craters, ancient cultures, and breathtaking scenery. It is the perfect destination for first-time travelers, wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and luxury safari lovers.
Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti is one of the world’s greatest wildlife destinations, known for its endless plains and extraordinary animal encounters. Covering 14,750 km², Serengeti is most famous for the Great Wildebeest Migration, when over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebras move across the grasslands searching for fresh grazing.
This dramatic journey attracts predators such as lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas, creating unforgettable safari moments. From the central Seronera Valley to the northern Mara River, visitors can experience year-round wildlife viewing, golden sunsets, and classic African scenery.
Ngorongoro Crater
Often called the Eighth Wonder of the World, the Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best places in Africa to see the Big Five lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and the rare black rhino.
The crater is a massive volcanic caldera with a permanently sheltered ecosystem, making it home to thousands of animals all year. With its unique landscapes, soda lakes full of flamingos, and incredible viewpoints from the crater rim, Ngorongoro offers a safari experience unlike anywhere else in the world.
Tarangire National Park
Tarangire is famous for its huge elephant herds, towering baobab trees, and open savannah landscapes. During the dry season, thousands of animals gather around the Tarangire River, making it one of the best wildlife viewing spots in the Northern Circuit.
Visitors often see lions, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and a wide variety of birds—more than 500 species. Tarangire is quieter than other major parks, giving travelers a peaceful and intimate safari experience.
Lake Manyara National Park
Located at the foot of the dramatic Great Rift Valley, Lake Manyara National Park is known for its rich birdlife, lush forests, and unique wildlife. The shallow alkaline lake attracts thousands of flamingos, pelicans, and other waterbirds.
The park is also home to the famous tree-climbing lions, large elephant families, hippos, monkeys, and thousands of baboons. The popular Treetop Walkway, stretching 370 meters through the forest canopy, offers a thrilling way to explore the park from above.
Arusha National Park
Arusha National Park is a small but incredibly diverse park located near Arusha town. It features beautiful landscapes, including the Momella Lakes, lush montane forests, open grasslands, and the stunning Mount Meru.
The park is home to many giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and flamingos. Visitors can enjoy unique activities such as walking safaris, canoeing on the Momella Lakes, and day hikes on Mount Meru, making it perfect for travelers looking for variety beyond traditional game drives.
